Basics are this. Moisture wicking, non cotton layer on feet and core will let the perspiration of body heat, produced by activity, evaporate away. Then add fleece and thermal layers for warmth.  Finish with a waterproof breathable outer shell  and you are set. For cold dry conditions the outter shell can be a good duck coat to seal out the wind. I also suggest that you get a jacket with a knit cuff on sleeves and wear a hooded pull over sweatshirt that will keep your neck warmer. Bottom line, I feel is that we will never see a day that electric as we know it will be 100% naturally produced.
