Mostly Daylight shift

The  year is 2010 and big industry rules the world. It is a well oiled high tech. machine with lots of computers. It runs constantly…24-7. And with high yield, high tech, comes diminished quality. Back in the day, farmers got up at the crack of dawn and worked until sunset and depending on the season that could easily mean 14 hours of constant labor.  Overalls are a common uniform of these hard workers. They take much pride in this trade.

When it’s country fair time, the  men and women alike show much enthusiasm in taking their prized produce, animals and canned goods for exhibit. Farming is not about getting rich. It is about quality and pride and love of nature.

Well to-do Farmer ?

posted by Hammel @ 9:53 AM
July 30, 2010

Half a century ago most people were farmers.  They raised and grew almost everything. The difference between wealthy families and poor folks was shown in their houses and barns. Poor folks had common homes and barns and did all of their work themselves but their crops and animals were just as good as the wealthy folks!

On the other side of the hill might be a wealthy family. The ladies in pretty dresses, sitting on a lovely front porch swinging and drinking sweet tea, while out back would be hired help in bib overalls dirty and sweaty doing all the back breaking work that is farming. Hired farm hands were hard workers. They would work for a wage for a wealthy farmer, then use that money to grow their own farm which was second shift.

So if you work double shifts??? Don’t complain, you are probably making time and a half for the second 8 hours.

Days gone by

A chicken coop was found at every country home 100 years ago. A daily chore for a woman or child of the residence was gathering the fresh eggs and lined overalls were a perfect choice of  work clothing.

When a chicken is just reaching laying age, approximately 6 months of age, it is called a pullet. Pullet eggs a fairly small and for the most part are not sell able. An average person who normally eats 2 eggs for breakfast could easily require 5 pullet sized eggs. Fun farm fact.

Hard workers survived

posted by Hammel @ 10:45 AM
July 28, 2010

When my granddaddy was a young man, his possessions were few. When it came to work he needed basic tools, mens insulated bib overalls, a strong back and the survival instinct.

In those days there were not paid sick days. No winter weather advisories to use as an excuse for not making it in to work. Yes sir! no work , no pay. No pay, no eat. Plain and simple, survival. If in our world today, the same rules applied, I feel the  country would be in better shape. If you are worried about how an injured man would survive… that is when his family or close friends would cover his share of the work. Families took care of each other, carried each other.  They talk about the great depression as if it was ” the end”  If you thing about it in another way you could say that the strong survived and much was learned during this humbling time. Today too much life support is used on sick companies that need to be left alone to collapse. We all know that the forest will be green again after a forest fire.. it just takes time and patience.

Fishin’ Practice

posted by Hammel @ 11:16 AM
July 27, 2010

The fun thing about this practice is that once in a while you will catch a real fish instead of a tree!  Unlike athletic practice, in which you have to wait for a real game to score!

Now lets talk about uniform! With this sport…anything goes, but some clothes are better than others! This little guy would be much better off if he were in Carhartt bib overalls  and boots! for starters if he gets into those high scratchy weeds his legs will get it and bare feet…that’s risky. For now, this bass buster is doing fine, but changes to his game plan will be just around the corner.

Summertime Fun

posted by Hammel @ 11:00 AM
July 26, 2010

My philosophy on raising kids is … let them discover almost anything they want instead of always saying no…because they are gonna get dirty! This gang will never forget the sticky swamp mud and all the laughs and the way I see it… That’s why they make soap and washing machines!!

Summer never lasts long enough here in WV. Before we know it the snow will be flying and the summer shorts will back in storage and we will be wearing insulated bib overalls. Then sled riding and tubing behind the quad will be our fun. I love the seasons..but summer is my favorite. Corn on the cob and vine ripened tomatoes….. Don’t forget the watermelon!

Ladies Welcome!

I bet Hamilton Carhartt would get a real kick out of the fact that what he built his whole business on, over 100years ago, men’s denim bib overalls, is now a fashionable fun clothing item that some ladies love to wear! for work or play they can’t be beat. Some things never lose their appeal, like roasting marshmallows around a campfire and hiking in the woods. This laid back summer day has all of these things and more!  When it comes to outdoor work and play, you can’t convince this gal that Carhartt isn’t the best choice for what to wear.

Trust & Learn

posted by Hammel @ 9:06 AM
July 24, 2010

With trust learning is inevitable. This statement is true with children and adults alike. If a student does not trust the teacher all is lost. This little man was very afraid of the large mouth bass, but with a little reassurance, he now knows first hand what a fish feels like… what fun!

Carhartt is a clothing manufacturer that has earned the trust of millions in the past 121 years. I have learned first hand that Carhartt lined bib overalls will keep me warm and they will last. I trusted the reputation that Carhartt had and I invested in their product. Not all investments work out so well!

I once heard a saying I liked very well and will share it with you.  ” We should not just spend time with our children…..We must Invest our time in our Children!”

Double-Wide-Smile!

Some comedian says ” I don’t care who ya are, now that’s funny”  These two cuties equal one big boy and that’s just plain fun!

These jeans are a bigger size but Carhartt bib overalls insulated and non insulated styles come in much bigger sizes. That because when it comes to getting your work done as a big man, it requires clothing that will serve you well by moving with you and we all know that overalls can’t be beat! Ask a big boy if he likes bibs for work and I will bet you a cup of coffee and a donut that I am right!

Family Traditions are the Best!

posted by Hammel @ 13:58 PM

Tradition- A handing over or passing on from generation to generation. With a little thought you can say that you have many family traditions. From how you celebrate holidays to simple family traditions, these special ways are familiar and dear to us. I will never forget as a young girl my family operated a dairy farm, which is hard work. Almost every Friday evening we would have pizza, chips & dip and “Frosty” root-beer. Now in those days, soda pop was not a common household item, it was a special treat. Today, 35 years later, I have an empty “Frosty” bottle on a shelf in my kitchen. I smile and think back to those days fondly and all of the hard chores that I had don’t even ruin all the rich memories created by this one family tradition. Carhartt insulated bibs were my best friend! 24/7  is what dairy farming requires and if your co workers are your siblings…look out… usually, low man on the totem pole was dictated by your age! But on that same note, the older you were…. the more you were expected to do.
