Advice from bib girl

Layer!! You have heard of it but do you know the benefits of it and how to best prepare for extreme cold or the more frustrating changing conditions. By layering on clothing to stay warm you can shed layers to keep from getting too warm and sweaty.. this lesson will safe you some discomfort to say the least.

Basics are this. Moisture wicking, non cotton layer on feet and core will let the perspiration of body heat, produced by activity, evaporate away. Then add fleece and thermal layers for warmth.  Finish with a waterproof breathable outer shell  and you are set. For cold dry conditions the outter shell can be a good duck coat to seal out the wind. I also suggest that you get a jacket with a knit cuff on sleeves and wear a hooded pull over sweatshirt that will keep your neck warmer. Finish out with Carhartt bib overalls insulated for winter and unlined bibs over jeans for less severe temperatures. For a healthier happier life…get Outdoors!

Simply neccessary

In our grandparents day a farm of some size was pretty much standard anywhere you went. You gathered your own fresh eggs and you or your next door neighbor had a cow for the fresh milk and cheese was also homemade.  The work was labor intensive and the food quality was excellent! You knew what you had was natural and healthy. In those days no one was aware of what the future would mean to agriculture. Many things have changed for the better but today if you want organically produced anything… get ready to pay a good bit more. My parents have raised large gardens forever!!! and they have stressed the importance of learning the lost art of canning and preserving homegrown fruits, vegetables and meats. I have to be honest, it is so hard for me to make the time and dedicate it to such a time consuming process. I am like the story of chicken little…. I am there to eat and enjoy the dinner, but wasn’t there to do all the work…. Shame on me! But I am not all bad… I have my work overalls and I help cut firewood for the outdoor furnace and I do help when I am cornered at harvest time. I am convinced there are not enough hours in the day.

Keep it local.

Welcome the local boy..Here is Keith Y. from Moundsville West Virginia. Keith has been a construction worker for over 23 years and specializes in building houses. Keith wears Carhartt bib overalls to work in because they “outwear anything else I have ever tried”  and “they have all the tool and utility pockets that I like.” He has both lined and unlined Carhartt bib overalls in his closet along with denim jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts and his favorite active jacket.

Keith is a firm believer in supporting small, local businesses and purchases his Carhartts from Hammel’s in Pleasant Valley, where he has been a customer for 3 years.

Got Bibs?

Who would have ever thought something as simple as bib overalls could get complicated. After several years retailing the line, I have found that when someone asks me one question… “Do you have bib overalls? “I come back with at least 4 or 5 questions  to determine which variety of bibs they are looking for.  First of all Carhartt bib overalls are the only brand I sell, so that’s not a question. I would ask them, lined or unlined? denim or duck? what color? what size? leg zippers or not?  It’s fun to visit with people so even if my web business takes off, I would never give up my retail store. Love to meet and visit with all types of folks!

Farmer in training

This little man is in his glory because he has total control over these adorable goats.  I can picture him in denim bib overalls with a bucket full of grain and don’t forget a straw hat! It doesn’t matter how spitty your hands get when you go to a petting zoo, because the residents are so lovable and appreciative of the visitors. This particular breed was not very vocal, but we got an earful at another pen! What a fun day. One that  we shall never forget!

Classic Carhartt unlined bib overalls

This set of bibs is  “NOT FOR SALE!” They were originally purchased by my parents for their first born grandson, who is now 25 years old! But that  only starts the story. Around 1985 a small pair of Carhartt unlined bib overalls were ordered for Brendan, who was born in January. After he grew out of them his younger brother was next. As owners of a general store in a small community, the idea to pass them around, “Just for fun!” seemed perfect. Well, over 2o different children have worn these bibs and they look great!. Faded and soft….just right!

My three children who are now 13, 11 and 3 have worn them…of course! Who would have ever thought such fun could come out of  these little bibs. I smile every time someone asks about them.

“As my Granddaddy used to Say!” An overall fun series-11

As my granddaddy used to say, ” Tonight we will be dining on RAREBIT !”  Well if that didn’t get us excited… Presentation is everything and when you throw in an unknown word… Wallah… everyone is interested. The word rarebit is a deliberate attempt to glamorize the dish…What is it? you ask… Let me  begin by saying that my granddaddy, dressed in his finest unlined overalls, together with his huntin’ dog, would go to the woods where the thick brush was and chase out rabbits!!! Yes… Rarebit is a fancy word for a cheesy dish, Welsh rabbit!   What fun…. uncovering old terms!

“As my Granddaddy used to say!”An overall fun series-10

As my Granddaddy used to say, ” You’ll have to HITCHHIKE into town”  Most of us have heard that phrase but never really knew the origin. This American coinage probably dates to the First World War. American boys were in training in military camps and when they would get a brief furlough they would head for home. The boys would HIKE until a car or truck approached going their way, then HITCH a ride.

I use allot of sayings that have been handed down through the generations. I recently learned of another word used in place of hitchhiking. It is called “Slugging”. In the D.C. area where traffic is thick, commuters will park their vehicle and get a ride with a complete stranger… the trade off is that the driver can now use the other lane..HOV high occupancy vehicle lane and get where they are going faster!!  If anyone has more on this topic…do post!   I would  not want to close this post without reminding readers that my Granddaddy… looked great in his insulated overalls. He is shown here in a dress jacket but I remember the farmer!

You Wanna Do Lunch?

What fun! This gentle camel is so well  trained that he knows better than to grab the whole bag and run! He stands there so patiently as if to sweetly beg for ” Just one more !”

The deer on the other hand were very noisy making a crying noise. There wasn’ t enough food in my bag to satisfy their demanding song. What  a great day, but oh so hot! I was of course dressed wrong to get to ride a camel. Carhartt bibs would have been the perfect attire. Pretty much all of the animals  ate the same treats… wouldn’t it be nice if our kids were so easily satisfied?!

Do Feed the Animals!

It seems we never out grow the enjoyment of feeding !  Whether it’s a mother and her child or a farmer in overalls tending to his livestock.

This little man loved all the attention that the animals gave him…or was it just his bag of  food!! Both!

The feeding zoos have it all figured out!  charge admission, charge for food for the animals, sell you a refreshment and a souvenir on the way out!!  Great memories… worth every cent!!   Living Treasures on Rt. 711 in Jones Mills, PA is a must visit if you want to make great memories!
