Gentlemen, That is a Lady!

Some things never change and sexual harassment on the job has been around since even before women entered the workforce. Many times on job sites where  the work is dirty and hard, some men and women forget where they left their good manners. This is now being seen as a serious matter and well it should. But this problem knows no boundaries… it is everywhere. It doesn’t matter if you make minimum wage or six figures… harassment has always been and always will be a problem.

Rosie wore her denim overalls and did a mans job because the men were sent to fight in the War, and the factory jobs had to be filled.

Awareness is heightened and many companies have disciplinary plans to deal with it.. so times have changed for the better in many respects.

Frostbite

posted by Hammel @ 10:46 AM
November 13, 2010

Frostbite is frozen water in body tissues. Like burns , frostbite injuries can be ranked in severity, with first-degree frostbite being the mildest. Fourth-degree frostbite is the most severe and may result in loss of the affected body part.

The most common parts of the body to become frostbitten include:

Fingers- Toes- Ears- Nose- Hands- Feet- Lips- Shins- Cheeks- Corneas

Frostbite happens when skin is exposed to freezing temperatures. This can cause the body tissue to freeze. Ice crystals actually form within the frozen body part and blood cannot flow adequately through the frozen tissue. This causes the frozen tissue to be deprived of blood and oxygen. The combination of freezing and oxygen deprivation causes tissue damage or tissue death. Rewarming may also ultimately lead to tissue death.

To help prevent frostbite, dress properly when going outside in cold weather. For example:

* Cover your head, face, hands, and feet adequately.
* Wear layers of clothing. Carhartt insulated bibs are a great way to keep warm!
* Wear materials that provide good insulation and keep moisture away from the skin (wool, polyester, polypropylene).
* Make sure you wear a waterproof outer layer and stay dry.
* Avoid drinking alcohol when you will be in cold weather.

Safety First

No matter what your job entails chances are what you are wearing will play a role at the end of the day. Are you in a high traffic situation and staying visible means staying safe? Are you working in rugged or frigid conditions or need Fire retardant garments to stay in compliance… whatever your occupation …”Dressing for Success” can simply mean that at the end of the day..”You clock out … Safe & Sound!” ” Your shift is done.” This can be accomplished by wearing hardworking, long lasting Carhartt Clothing. Carhartt offers FR clothing and plain overalls and everything in between.

Work clothes manufactured to very high standards are an investment… and you are worth it! When you think of what a day can bring, it doesn’t take long to want to “Dress for Safety Successfully” and not regret later that you had the choice.

Bountiful Blessings

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and for most of us this means a belt loosening sized meal… that makes you want to take a nap and then go back for more. This Thanksgiving think of all of the different places that your meal came from. Possible Idaho for your potatoes… Southern states for the fruit salad and cranberries, turkey farms all over  and on and on… Thank Heavens our farmers love what they do! Farming is not a get rich occupation. It requires long hours and it is not an easy job.

Clad in bib overalls , up with the sun and before and work all day. Every season of the year a farmer has work to do… planting, cultivating, harvesting and I bet if you ask most farmers what their least favorite part of owning a farm is that they will tell you, The paperwork and uncertainty of the harvest. Much work can be invested but until  the harvest goes to market and is sold, a farmers only hope is prayer and for most that is enough.

Simply neccessary

In our grandparents day a farm of some size was pretty much standard anywhere you went. You gathered your own fresh eggs and you or your next door neighbor had a cow for the fresh milk and cheese was also homemade.  The work was labor intensive and the food quality was excellent! You knew what you had was natural and healthy. In those days no one was aware of what the future would mean to agriculture. Many things have changed for the better but today if you want organically produced anything… get ready to pay a good bit more. My parents have raised large gardens forever!!! and they have stressed the importance of learning the lost art of canning and preserving homegrown fruits, vegetables and meats. I have to be honest, it is so hard for me to make the time and dedicate it to such a time consuming process. I am like the story of chicken little…. I am there to eat and enjoy the dinner, but wasn’t there to do all the work…. Shame on me! But I am not all bad… I have my work overalls and I help cut firewood for the outdoor furnace and I do help when I am cornered at harvest time. I am convinced there are not enough hours in the day.

New operations & old fashioned motives

Farming or agriculture practices have evolved over the decades as you well know. Our early settlers plowed the land with oxen and horses and by hand in comparison to the latest high tech. air conditioned, closed cab ( with A/C) , tractor that is a common site out west on large commercial farms. Seeds and propagation practices have become a science as hybrids and new strains are discovered and developed every year.

Now let us think about what has virtually remained unchanged. The desire to be a farmer has not changed and his choice of  Carhartt overalls as his work uniform.

FFA salutes and educates young students about the honorable vocation of farming and Carhartt supports them as well.

My great great granddaddy had his ways!

Carhartt overalls have been around for over 120 years … they were introduced in my Great,Great Granddaddy’s day! Things were very different then but in many ways, some things never change. Like a grandfathers way of delighting the children with a piece of candy and a story of how life was when he was young. When I think of the modern day technology we enjoy and how it makes what used to be a difficult task now a breeze.

I often wonder what this world will be like if I have the privilege to live into my golden years. I cannot imagine laughing at how outdated or slow todays  technology is when reflecting back in 20 years.

Did you see that?

We all love for our efforts to be acknowledged. Whether it is a child learning to fish or a grown adult  learning a new skill at work that is required of them.  It is a great blessing to have an ” atta boy!” once in awhile.

I recall my little Isaac, all fitted in his Carhartt overalls, learning to walk. He would fall more times trying to  see if I was watching than anything else.  I think there is some wisdom to gain here.

Concentration is a life skill that can be very, very valuable.  A person who can block  distractions and focus  on what  is the the task to accomplish will achieve great things in this life! And once you succeed..then you can look to see who is admiring your talent of Focus! Be ready to amaze and inspire!

A man with a vision

Hamilton Carhartt founded his company late in the 19th century… 1889 to be exact. He had a drive and vision that carried him through the great depression.. narrowly surviving what destroyed most small industry at the time.  He worked hard but enjoyed an enviable life.. was married to his wife for 56 years and died with her in a car accident… I know that doesn’t sound enviable at first..but think about it… neither one of them had to suffer losing the other … and they were  out driving around..together, so they had a full and healthy lives… Sounds good to me! We all gotta go sometime!

Carhartt overalls are probably what the company is best known for … today they are made in several styles and colors.

Marcellus Shale in WV = New Hope

posted by Hammel @ 13:49 PM
September 14, 2010

Many residents involved in the Marcellus Shale “Rush” are not equating this to “Hitting the lottery” but viewing it as new hope for a future of country living and being debt free. So many owners of farms have known for some time that farming doesn’t pay the bills but have been unwilling to sell or subdivide their family farms into housing communities… and now… are breathing a sigh of relief. One neighbor told me that he always wanted a brand new John Deere tractor and now he can afford one… He was seriously happy !!  The new industry we never dreamed is here and is wide open… the fairly quiet Route 250 now sounds like a diesel super highway… but hey…you can’t have this much going on and expect peace and quiet all the time.

Drilling is very labor intensive and dangerous and we have seen more than one incident where emergency personnel had to draw on the special training for just such a time. Workers  wear heavy duty work clothing such as lined overalls for protection and allot of high visibility clothing.
